Exactly what it says on the tin. |
Kottke.org was born in 1998, which makes it one of the longest running blogs on the Mighty Interwebs. Other things one can learn from the About page include the fact that Jason Kottke has a wife (she is a blogger too) and two kids, and that he is currently working on a site aiming to give people a place where they can keep all the things they 'like' on the Internet together. He has also registered himself on as many social networks as he could for some reason.
So basically what he does in his blog is put up links to sites and things he thinks are cool. He has some governing ideas though, precisely two: posts should be about the new liberal arts (or liberal arts 2.0) and/or posts should showcase that people are awesome. His words. This means that he has lots of blog entries about new media and videos showing someone jumping a rope from the perspective of the rope. Also a link to a story about a guy who broke his penis on a date.
This site is obviously popular because Jason Kottke is always on the look for interesting things to share with people, and he does not want to cover everything. He chose a topic and stays in that. This makes it easier for visitors to decide whether they are interested or not in what his blog has for them, as well as good for readers who do not have to scroll past content that is far from their fields of interests. Jason Kottke also posts a lot and quite regularly too, which is definitely another plus.
